Fancy Dancing In A Hula Costume This Halloween ?

0

The Hula costume is a traditional dress from the Hawaiian islands. It can make a fun costume for summer dress up parties or even for Halloween provided the heating is on. It is quite a skimpy costume so it’s sure to get you plenty of attention at a party – especially if you can entertain the crowd with the odd dance here and there. There are also joke hula costumes for men if you want to get a laugh or two.

The original hula costume that was worn by women or girls to greet returning travelers was a fairly simple dress. It was a grass skirt known as a pau. Flowers might adorn the head or go round the waist. Flowers might also be formed into a garland or necklace and worn around the shoulders. Bracelets and anklets made from flowers may also be worn. These accessories formed from flowers are called lei. The costume has been adapted with the times to include a top.

In terms of a fancy dress costume, these elements of the costume are recreated. The Hula Hunny is a popular costume. It consists of a green skirt with ‘grass’ fabric panels and a pink half top with ruffle sleeves and trim. Lei-styled flower waist trim, bracelet and headband are complete the look. This is a very pretty and distinctive costume.

The polar opposite of the Hula Hunny is the Wanna Nookie costume. This is obviously meant to be a bit of fun. It is designed for the man that wants to get in touch with his feminine side for the night and keep the rest of the party in fits of laughter at the same time.

In brief, the costume consists if a jumpsuit style costume that is worn over the body. It has the accentuated shape of the female body with an attached grass style skirt and a bikini top. To get the most of of this look you would have to supplement the costume with possibly a wig (as in the picture) and the odd lei or garland to wear as an accessory. This is a fun costume and surprisingly comfortable too !

Background to the Hula

Hula is an important part of the culture of the Hawaiian indigenous population. It has gone through many changes since boats and settlers from western civilizations first started visiting the islands. Even today, it still has a role to play in modern Hawaiian society. There is the hula welcome dance that many tourists will see when they arrive. There are also various ceremonial dances that will open public buildings or bless a new public endeavor. There are Hula schools were people learn the songs, music and dances to be performed at various Hula ceremonies. The hula costumes illustrated here are just a bit of fun and are in no way meant to demean or denigrate the significance of the Hula in Hawaiian society and culture.
